C19 vs C13 Power Cords: Which One Does Your Rack Need?

The 10-second answer

C13/C14 is the standard 10A connector you see on almost every server, monitor and switch. C19/C20 is the heavier 16A connector used when the equipment draws more current: PDU input feeds, UPS units, storage arrays and high-wattage power supplies. The two are physically different — you cannot plug a C13 cord into a C19 inlet.

How to tell which inlet you have

C13 is a "figure-8 on its side" with two vertical slots. C19 is larger, D-shaped, with the ground pin on the flat side. If your PDU or UPS manual says "16A input" or "high current inlet", it is almost certainly C20 (the appliance inlet) and needs a C19 cord.
