Rack rails come in two flavours: standard square-hole rails (the vast majority of 19-inch server racks) and solid/round-hole rails. Cage nuts exist for square-hole rails; clip nuts exist for everything else. If you buy the wrong one, you will find out at 2am during a deployment.
A cage nut slides into the square hole, spring clips hold it in place, and the captive threads accept an M6 screw. The key benefit: you can mount and re-mount equipment without holding a nut behind the rail. This is why data-centre teams buy cage nuts by the hundred — they are effectively a consumable.
Clip nuts snap over the edge of a rail or panel. They suit OEM racks, 10-inch racks and custom enclosures where square holes do not exist. They are easier to retrofit but less rigid under heavy loads.
