Mecanum Wheel vs Omni Wheel: Which Drive System for Your AGV?

Both give you omnidirectional movement — but the load rating, control stack and maintenance budget are completely different. Here is how to spec it before you order.

The core difference: roller angle changes everything

Mecanum wheels carry their rollers at 45° to the axle; omni wheels mount them at 90°. That angle is not a cosmetic detail — it decides the entire kinematics of your platform. A mecanum wheel converts part of its rolling motion into sideways thrust, which is why a 4-wheel mecanum base can strafe, rotate in place and drive diagonally with zero steering motors. An omni wheel only converts motion perpendicular to its own plane, so lateral movement relies on the side rollers sliding — it works, but you trade traction for simpler mechanics.

Load capacity and traction

This is where most sourcing decisions are made. Because mecanum rollers sit at 45°, the load path runs through the wheel hub and spreads across the full roller surface. A 4-inch (100mm) mecanum wheel with PU rollers typically carries 10-20 kg per wheel, so a 4WD base handles 40-80 kg, and 8-10 inch wheels push a rigid chassis into the 100-200 kg range. Omni wheels are different: the small side rollers carry the load on a narrow contact patch and slip noticeably under load. As a rule of thumb, keep omni bases under 50 kg; beyond that, mecanum is the dependable choice.

Control and drive complexity

Both systems need independent wheel speed control, but mecanum adds one kinematic layer: the standard 4-wheel mecanum equation decomposes each wheel's speed into forward, lateral and rotational components. This is well documented, and any mainstream stack (Arduino, STM32, ROS odometry) handles it — we ship the tuning sheet with our drive combo. Omni platforms can use three wheels and simplify the math, but three-wheel bases are more sensitive to floor bumps and load shifts. For AGVs that must hold a line under payload, the 4-wheel mecanum structure is the more forgiving one.

Cost and maintenance

Mecanum rollers wear and need periodic replacement; budget a spare roller set per 2-3 thousand operating hours on rough floors. Omni side rollers are cheaper to replace but smaller — they pick up grit more easily and stall on warehouse floors with debris. Both prefer smooth, dry surfaces; neither is happy on gravel. If your site has clean epoxy lanes, mecanum is the better long-term cost per kg moved. If you are building a light indoor R&D robot that rarely carries load, omni keeps the initial BOM lower.
