Server Rack Outfitting Checklist: What You Actually Need

A bare rack is not a rack. Before you slide in the first server, the cage nuts, shelves, blanking panels, managers, PDU and cords decide whether the install takes an afternoon or a week — this is the parts list ops teams wish they had on day one.

Start from the workload, then the rack fills itself

Every bare rack gets outfitted differently. Before ordering parts, answer three questions: what will mount here (standard servers, GPU nodes or network gear), how many units, and what power does each draw. That drives the mounting hardware, the shelf count, the PDU/cord mix and how much vertical cable space you need.

A five-step fitting order

  1. Fit cage nuts across every U you plan to use.
  2. Install shelves and any non-rail equipment.
  3. Mount the PDU and cable managers at the sides.
  4. Seal empty positions with blanking panels.
  5. Run power and data, then label both ends of every cord.

What do I need to outfit a bare server rack?

Start with mounting hardware (cage nuts and screws), 1U shelves for heavy units, blanking panels to seal empty U positions, horizontal and vertical cable managers, a PDU plus matching power cords, and labels. The exact mix depends on the workload: a GPU rack needs heavier power (C19/C20 lanes) and more vertical space for thick cords, while a general-purpose rack leans on shelves and horizontal managers.

How many cage nuts does a server rack need?

Estimate per device rather than per U: most rail-mounted units use four cage-nut positions (two per side), heavier or double-rail units use more. For a mixed 42U rack, a practical starting point is roughly 100-200 cage nuts including spares — then buy in kits so you do not run short mid-install. Add about 10-20% spares for lost or stripped fasteners.

Are blanking panels and cable managers really necessary in a GPU rack?

Yes, for two reasons: blanking panels stop conditioned air from leaking through empty U positions and creating hot spots, and cable managers keep thick C19/C20 power cords and patch cables organised so airflow and maintenance do not suffer. In high-density racks both are cheap insurance against thermal and service headaches.
